one person’s method, linda’s Process
REFLECTION Because my patriot was assigned to run the commissary ( A Quartermaster- Lieutenant today) he was probably a good hunter, as the troops usually needed to supplement meager rations by foraging.
He walks through the Virginia forest thinking about his upcoming trip. I have yet to add a “thought” balloon
METHOD:
- Sketched it
- Traced in PHOTOSHOP and repainted to simplify it (Still needs more .)
- The photo is from a free site, Pixabay.com
- Process tedious and time-consuming
SHOPPING
Although attached to the 9th Regiment, John served with militia who supplied themselves & he wears a hunting shirt.
METHOD:
- Traced photo of husband using PROCREATE; painted
- Online photo of a “colonial merchant” traced in PROCREATE then modified
- Sign from online photo, resurfaced and lettered in PHOTOSHOP
- 2nd man traced in Procreate
- CLIP2COMIC app —saves time!
ROAD TO AUGUSTA Illustrating the trip Augusta, Georgia, is inspired by a famous painting, “Journey of the Magi,” circa 1434, Artist Sassetta (Stefano di Giovanni.) I will continue this approach, and if anyone else wants to use the idea, feel free!
METHOD:
- PROCREATE to trace and re-color.
- Colors, sizes (too many long rectangles?) and styles might not coordinate, but I can fix that later.
- CLIPTOCOMIC speeded things up.
SIGN ME UP
METHOD
- PHOTOSHOP to simplify a reenactment photo
- PROCREATE to trace ( do this instead of PS)
- Repainted in Procreate
- Added figure sending in front ; Procreate layers
- CLIP2COMIC to get black outlines
COMISSARY DUTY The troops with supplies never got close to the battle, because food and ammunition were in short supply and needed safety.
So they camped a lot. I think this image may be in the, ” Hurry up and wait,” category ; Have to decide on Speech Balloons METHOD:
- This is inspired by a famous painting, a theme I will repeat. Used a SCREENSHOT
- Image traced further in PROCREATE / painted with reduced palette, reduced and simplified soldiers
- Finished with CLIP2COMIC
The image is based on Pieter Brueghel”s “Harvesters” painting from 1684
SHINE A LIGHT
Images are not in order. I wasn’t sure if I really had to “Shine a Light” on the Patriot.
METHOD:
- Based on an internet photo of a work out of copywrite, to accompany his letter.
- PROCREATE; Trace and reduce shapes, lights and darks, and simplied colors.
- Procreate Helps change shapes, i.e. the candle flame
- CLIP2COMIC helps with black outlines,
MILITARY ACTION
John’s first exploit was called the “Florida Campaign,” and he wrote that they had to sneak away.
METHOD:
- 3 images found at Pixabay, a foreground and background with a river in-between, and a small fire in the distance ( I may add more.)
- 3 layers in PROCREATE as it lets one distort — look closely & notice the background shoreline is pulled downward.
- The figure in a different layer ; erased unneeded areas
- Screenshot of the result is imported it all into CLIP2COMIC. It was fast… well for me, as I am slow.
BATTLE OF RAMSOUR’S MILL
John served in 3 states, and was involved in a single, horrific fight, The Battle for Ramsour’s Mill in South Carolina; drawing leading up to this might become more chaotic, and disorienting. I am thinking these panels might be very stark and abstract, and as the color doesn’t work with the softer earlier palette, I know I need a few drawings that are neutral, grays and blacks to lead into that episode
METHOD:
- 2 images from reenactment photos
- Combined layers in PROCREATE; simplified and distorted
- Doesn’t “go” with previous images = no outlines.
- May use Clip2Comic
